Gilbert, AZ Schools to Layoff Over 190

Public schools in Gilbert, Arizona are expected to hand out more than 190 layoff notices later this week.

The school board seems likely to approve the list, as their budget shortfall could range anywhere from $2.5 million to $13 million.

A meeting agenda released Friday has indicated that 68 teachers have already either retired or resigned.

The hardest hit have been kindergarten teachers, with more than 60 being targeted for the layoffs.

The board meeting takes place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the governing board room of the Educational Services Complex, 140 S. Gilbert Road.

The public is encouraged to make comments by filling out cards and handing them to board secretary Susan Sokolsky before the meeting begins.
