New York MTA Files for 750 Layoffs

The New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has filed an obligatory alert to the Department of Labor notifying them of their plans to layoff 750 employees.

The layoff of bus workers would go into effect June 27th, coninciding with planned service cuts. The rest of the layoffs would not be finalized until July 4th.

“I don’t think the layoffs are necessary. They are sitting on the money and causing New York’s working families great amounts of pain,” said John Samuelsen, president of Trasport Workers Union Local 100.

Samuelsen also alleged he believes the MTA is using the threat of layoffs to gain leverage in the renegotiating of existing contracts.
