Redondo Beach to Eliminate 16 Teachers

The Redondo Beach Unified School District’s Board of Education has approved a measure to layoff 16 of the 24 elementary school teachers who were notified in March of their jobs being in jeopardy.

The district is looking at a budget deficit for next year of about $4 million. Also approved was the removal of the nutrition network coordinator position, a decision which affects two employees.

“This will be the most damaging thing that will occur to the School District,” board President Drew Gamet said in reference to the reductions. “It’s great that we can do buildings (the board also discussed the construction of a new, multimillion-dollar cafeteria at Redondo Union High School, funded by Measure ‘C’), but this is what counts.”
