davidpaterson_160x120The New York Post has reported that, according to a source, New York Governor, David Paterson, is considering the layoff of nearly 10,000 government employees.

The potential for so many layoffs arises from the recent federal court ruling that preliminarily blocked the governor’s furlough plan – a move designed to save the state $30 million a week.  If further hearings on the matter find the furlough improper, the state could see a massive, unprecedented round of layoffs.

The state currently is facing a $9.2 billion dollar deficit and the governor and legislators have not been able to agree on a budget.

To further complicate matters, the administration signed a pledge with unions last July that promises no further state worker layoffs.  The state legislature questions the legality of the agreement.  Unions argue the agreement is iron clad, which promises a lengthy fight in court should the governor decide to issue pink slips.
