The Broward County School District announced Monday that 1305 employees had been officially laid off over the weekend. The cuts include 568 teachers and 737 other employees.

Acting Associate Superintendent of Human Resources Gracie Diaz held out hope that many of the teachers might be rehired over the summer: “These numbers will change rapidly,” said Diaz, “as we receive vacancies from unexpected resignations and retirements and for those teachers who do not meet their certification requirements by June 30.”

Broward County, which borders Miami-Dade County, includes Ft. Lauderdale. The Broward County School District is currently running a $130 million budget deficit.
