Layoffs in Genesee County, Michigan

A deficit reduction plan was approved in Genesee County, Michigan which targets 12 employees to be laid off.

The 12 positions are far fewer than what was initially expected, with 64 being thought the target number as recently as last week. The unspent funds from several departments were used to lower the number of layoffs.

The layoffs are ultimately a result of a recent administrative judge’s decision which ruled that county commissioners were in violation of their contract with union workers. This happened when a plan was executed giving eight unpaid days off for employees. The ruling forced the repayment of the days missed which prompted about $1.6 million in cuts before the end of the year.
