Reuters is reporting that that most sacred of institutions, the House of Representatives is one step closer to passing legislation that could send as much as $10 billion to the states for public schools.  Can it be true?  Did someone hoodwink the entire Congress when he or she slipped the appropriation into the current defense spending bill?  Do spending and defense correlate in some way?

In any case, the measure must pass the Senate, that other sacred institution, before educators see a single dollar.  One analysis shows that the appropriation could save as many as 138,000 jobs in education.  Read the employment head lines.  Educators are seeing more layoffs than they have since who knows when.  The system needs sweet relief.

Unfortunately, Republicans are already crying foul, citing the ballooning deficit.  Am I the only one that has a kid or knows a kid, or a teacher?  I’m willing to pay the price if it means that my children can go to a public school that has classrooms and not lecture halls.
