The number of layoffs for Buffalo’s public system has been significantly reduced. The original budget plan called for 124 teacher layoffs for the upcoming school year called for. However, only 44 teachers in the system will get the axe.

Many of Buffalo’s teachers have accepted the system’s early-retirement package. The current plans will cut six in the social studies department, eight in the career and technical education, 15 in math and 15 in science. No teachers in elementary education will be subject to the layoffs.

“I don’t know whether this will stand, but that’s where we are now,” said superintendent James A. Williams.

Williams expressed concern for one department in particular. “I think we need an explanation of why they need to cut so many science teachers, especially when there is money coming in from the federal government.”

Williams said the number of layoffs in each department was likely subject to scheduling needs at the secondary level.
