North Miami Beach is facing $4 million budget gap and up to 194 city employees may be affected.

City Manager Kelvin Baker has offered up another proposal that he says would help fill the gap. Baker’s proposal, if passed, would constitute 10% salary reduction for all city employees as well as 10 furlough days.

Baker revealed a preliminary budget back in June. He said that, to avoid layoffs, police pensions would need to be reformed. He asked that the pensions have $200,000 minimums and that the time it takes for the pension to reach 70 percent be extended.

Baker claims that without pension reform, layoffs would be necessary.  The layoffs would start with part-time employees at the city’s library and parks department.

Layoffs to 194 employees would result in a $1 million savings for the city, thus it is a given that cuts will extend beyond layoffs.
