Boston Medical Center has announced plans to reduce its workforce by 119 staff members. September 30 marks the end of their fiscal budget, which currently has a $175 million shortfall.

The hospital employs  close to 6,000 people and the layoffs will only be making a small impact on the overall budget gap.

“We can not cut our way to prosperity or to even break even. We need additional revenue,’’ said Boston Medical Center’s chief executive Kate Walsh in an interview. Walsh added that additional downsizing and consolidating of services with another provider will become necessary in the event that the hospital goes broke.

The hospital is hoping federal aid can come to the rescue, an influx of $90 million for the next two years is on the table.
