Citing a continued decline in demand for its land-line services, AT&T announced this week that it plans to eliminate 151 jobs in Connecticut by early November.

The telecommunication company notified union leaders of the proposed cuts this week. According to the New Haven Register, AT&T plans to conduct the layoffs by Nov. 4. The majority will come from AT&T’s land-line service and the remainder are part of AT&T Business Solutions.

“We work to match our work force to the needs of the business,” AT&T spokesman Marty Richer told the New Haven Register. “While we’re reducing some jobs in our shrinking wire-line business, we continue to hire in those areas of the business that are growing, particularly wireless and video.”

Union leaders have called into the question the move, citing the fact that people working the jobs that are slated to be cut are already working 50 to 60 hours a week and still can’t keep up with demand.

Union President William Henderson said the cuts are not the result of a lack of work, but “of profits and greed at the expense of service.”
