The Port of Everett in Washington State has, until now, been able to avoid layoffs due to the recession. However, that will soon be over.

The Port has seen a continous drop in space rentals, as well as a decline in rentals from businesses. This has forced the port to rethink its plans for redevelopment. It will have to layoff employees as well as cut back its plans for capital improvement projects in 2011.

“It’s tough,” said executive director John Mohr. “We’ve been able to avoid the furloughs and layoffs for the last two years by keeping the pressure on.”

The port will cut 8% of it’s staff and implement furlough days for a quarter of its employees.
