New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced plans this week to cut a staggering 10,000 city jobs.

Some changes will take place immediately, and the process will continue through the end of the next fiscal year, June 2012.

“More spending reductions are going to be necessary,” said Bloomberg, “and we are going to continue to reduce the number of employees we have by not filling positions—we simply cannot afford the size of our current workforce.”

The majority of the layoffs will affect the cities school district, with 6,166 teachers and other educators losing their jobs. The budget for the Department of Education is being reduced by $350 million.
