New Jersey FlagA city proposal which would have avoided 167 police layoffs in Newark, New Jersey, has been rejected by the Newark Fraternal Order of Police.

The “take it or leave it” proposal asked for $9.5 million in budget cuts, including $3.7 million in salary deferrals. Both a lack of information and the absence of formal negotiations were stated reasons for the rejection.

“Mayor (Cory) Booker has declared that we should judge him on his ability to lower crime,” reads a statement from the police order. After the ‘bloodiest summer in decades,’ both city residents and the FOP will do just that … If Mayor Booker is looking for a villain in this matter, he need only look in the mirror.”
