The San Diego Unified School District is planning to cut a little over 900 full time positions for next year in response to a $120 million budget deficit.  Many of those positions are actually shared by multiple part time employees so the total number of layoffs will exceed the number of positions being cut.

Most of the positions being eliminated are classroom teachers, about half of whom are elementary school teachers, but the cuts also include eight principals, 25 vice principals, 42 nurses and 59 counselors.

SDUSD is the second largest school district in California, with about 130,000 students and 225 schools.
