Another newspaper is going to be out of a job in the near future. This time it is thanks to the consolidation of the North County Times and The Californian into printing at a single press. This consolidation will represent a loss of about 50 employees to the paper. Well according to the layoff notices that were sent out it is more like 56. Since the layoffs are all about consolidation related the cuts are all coming from the papers press and packaging departments. The layoffs will go into effect on the 4th of June.

Of course this is not the only media company to get rid of staff in order to save money, or as part of a money savings plan.  For those of you who missed out on our earlier coverage here is a look at a double set of layoffs in the Philadelphia papers:

“The group that owns the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com are getting ready to layoff 19 journalists. While 21 workers did take a voluntary layoff deal, with terms that have not been released, but cuts will still come for those who have not chosen to be out of a job.

Of course, this is not the first time that cuts have come to this particular news organization. For those of you who missed out on our earlier coverage here is an excerpt:

“It looks like more bad news is coming to workers in the field of journalism as more workers are being put out of a job in the name of the bottom line. In this case the company that is getting rid of workers is the Philadelphia Media Network. The executive met with leaders for the workers Guild in order to talk about cuts to the newsrooms at  the Inquirer, the Daily News and Philly.com. Overall these newsrooms will cut about 37 jobs. Of course, the company is not looking to layoff if they can avoid it, they are hoping to buy out older workers into early retirement.

The cuts are happening not because of closures, but because the news rooms of the three publications will be merging in order to use all of their resources more effectively.”

In Florida it was the Tampa Tribune who was getting ready to get rid of staff here is an excerpt:

“In some cases it works, and in others it is simply not enough. That means other measures have to be taken and staff has to be let go for the paper to be in the black. That was the case for the staff at The Tampa Tribune this week. They found out that a total of 165 people are going to lose their jobs right before the holidays. The majority of the employees who are going to be cut are being notified today and throughout the rest of the week.

For those of you who are not familiar with the publication The Tampa Tribune is actually a family of community and weekly publications. The group includes not only local newspapers and other publications but a website (Tbo.com) and a local television news station. Though you should note that none of the cuts are coming from the TV station, since that area of the business is in a better position that the others, according to data released by the company.

These cuts will represent a reduction of about 16 percent of the workforce for The Tampa Tribune.”
