Three army employees, an Army officer and an Army civilian, received recognition on May 31st while at the Pentagon. These employees received recognition because they have put a lot of time and effort into helping to improve the civilian workforce for Army members. The undersecretary or the Army, Joseph W. Westphal, genuinely believes that the Army works more efficiently when civilians and the military members work well with one another. There were three awards that these employees received, which include the John W. Macy Jr. Award, Nick Hoge Award, and the William H. Kushnick Award, all of which are high honors for anyone to receive.

Westphal believes that in providing these employees with the awards, they are helping to paint a picture of how important it is for the workforce to be the perfect place for civilians and military members, in which both kinds of individuals can work well with one another. He says that it is generally important to make sure that the creativity continues. Nancy A. Lane was the recipient of the Kushnick Award, in which she was recognized for her engagement with the civilian programs that were made available. She has worked on helping to develop a number of different strategies that are used to help both the Disability Evaluation System as well as the Army Substance Abuse Program, both of which are very important programs. After having received the award, Lane said that she felt extremely honored and was also very humble upon accepting the award. She was surprised that she had been the one to earn the award. She also pointed out that she has had the opportunity to work with other people who have, in the past, won the award as well.

Christopher B. Carlile, the commander of the Corpus Christi Army Depot in the state of Texas, received the John W. Macy Jr. Award, in which he was recognized for showing leadership skills and helping other civilian employees to also gain leadership skills as well. He also helped to make a number of different improvements amongst mission support. Last but certainly not least, the Nick Hoge award was received by Ursula L. Burkhalter, who happens to be a human resources specialist for the United States Army. She was excited and honored to have received the award but also admitted to feeling a bit nervous about it too. She did not expect to win the award but was grateful for the opportunity and felt a sense of pride and accomplishment after hearing her name.

Each of the individuals who received the separate awards was well-deserving of the awards because of the many accomplishments they have made. Along with the accomplishments, each of these individuals are caring individuals who are also known for their leadership skills and their ability to solve different problems, some of which can be quite difficult to deal with and overcome.
