The United Stated Justice Department has decided to sue a casino in the Las Vegas area, the Tuscany Suites & Casinos. The reason that the lawsuit was filed was because allegations were made against the casino in which people were discriminated against if they were not citizens of the United States when applying for a job with the casino. It is believed that this was an ongoing issue with the Tuscany Suites & Casino and that it went on for at least five years. The lawsuit was made public last week when the Civil Rights Division of The Justice Department made an announcement about it. There have been several allegations made about the Tuscany.

One allegation states that Tuscany treated those who were not United States citizens different from those who were citizens of the United States when going through the process of eligibility for employment. Those who were not citizens of the United States had to provide several other documents and information about themselves than employees who were citizens of the United States. Tuscany also apparently made non-citizens continuously re-verify their citizenship, even though the employees had Permanent Resident Cards, which are commonly referred to as Green Cards.

It is against the law to treat workers differently just because they were not born in the United States. In fact, it goes against the Immigration and Nationality Act, which requires that employers treat all of their workers the same when it comes down to the hiring process, firing employees, and verification of employment eligibility. However, this is something that, according to the United States Justice Department, the Tuscany simply did not do. An assistant attorney general, Thomas Perez, says that the department wants to make sure that employers are not discriminating on their workers, as they expect all workers to be treated fairly and equally.

The lawsuit shows that Tuscany received complaints about discrimination which date back to the beginning of 2011. It was shortly after the complaint was made that the Justice Department decided that they would investigate it further to see if this was a particular pattern that the Tuscany was dealing with, basically treating those who are not citizens of the United States much differently than those who are citizens. It appears that since at least 2006 and all the way up until about October of 2011, Tuscany treated these non-citizens of the United States differently when it came to their employment verification practices. The lawsuit asks that Tuscany pay a fine, which has not been declared yet, and also provide relief to those employees who have had to suffer in different ways because of their unprofessional practices, which includes receiving reinstatement and back pay as well.
