Dana Whinnery has been working in Farmington Hills for over two decades and with good reason. Farmington Hills is not just his place of work, it is also the place that he has called home and has never thought to leave the area before. However, a recent opportunity that was presented to Whinnery has enabled him to take on a different position, which ultimately means leaving the place that he has called home for so long. Whinnery, who happens to be 56 years old, recently announced earlier on in the week that he will be retiring from his position at Farmington Hills, effective on July 12th. He will be taking on the position as the director of human resources for the Livonia Public Schools. Whinnery never planned to switch positions but feels like the timing is right. He believes this position is something that he is meant to fulfill.

Whinnery says that he will miss working as the city manager for Farmington Hills and says that it has been a pleasure to work in such a welcoming environment. Whinnery says that he has always believed he has one of the best kinds of jobs available but feels that the position being offered to him has come at just the right time, so he chose to accept it. He is excited about being able to take on the new position and work for the Livonia Public School, especially since they share similar values. Whinnery says that he would not have gone to any typical school district but felt that this school district has the right kind of values which is why the decision came as a no-brainer to him.

With the new position he is taking on, Whinnery is going to be quiet busy. He will be responsible for over 2,000 employees and dozens of schools. Even with the major responsibilities, Whinnery says that he is excited and feels comfortable to take on such a position. He feels as though he has the experience that is necessary, especially after working as city manager for Farmington Hills for so many years. Whinnery believes everything is falling right into place and knows he is leaving the city in good hands, especially since many of the things he was working for are starting to come through for the city of Farmington Hills. He has accomplished many of his goals and will be sad to leave the city of Farmington Hills. He will miss the residents that he has gotten to know over the years and feels honored to have had the opportunity to work for the city for so long. The Councilman for the city, Randy Bruce, admits that he is sad to see Whinnery go but says that he is happy for him and the opportunity that he has received.
