Unemployment Levels in Virginia

The unemployment rate in the Arlington County area increased in the span of one month, from May to June, which was something that actually was quite expected. The reason it was expected that the unemployment rate would increase during the month of June would be due to the number of recent high school and college graduates who would be entering into the workforce.  During the month of June, the unemployment rate for the county was at 3.7 percent, meaning that a mere 5,189 individuals in the county were currently looking for work and were unemployed while 134,244 of those individuals were, in fact, employed within the county. The information on these figures was provided by the Virginia Employment Commission at the beginning of the month.

While the jobless rate increased from 3.3 percent during the month of May to 3.7 percent during the month of June, it is still the lowest unemployment rate for all of the different counties and cities in the Virginia area, which is definitely a good thing for those who are living in the county. Even though there were more residents who were unemployed at this point than there was the year before, there were also more people making reports of finding employment from the month prior.

When it came down to different areas in Virginia, the unemployment rate seemed to increase in most of them. Some of the counties that saw an increase in unemployed individuals include Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Alexandria and Prince William County. Unemployment levels also increased in the Falls Church City, which is known for being a less populated area. Most economists believe that this is not cause for concern, stating that the unemployment rate usually does increase between the months of May and June, especially since there are a number of recent college grads and students who enter out into the real word, entering into the labor market and looking to find employment. It makes sense why the unemployment rate would be higher because these individuals are just beginning in the workforce and are therefore looking for employment.

Of all the different counties in Virginia, there were certain areas that had some of the lowest unemployment numbers. Those particular counties included Arlington County, Loudoun County and Fairfax County. The unemployment rate for the state of Virginia as a whole was rated the 10^th best for all of the different states within the country. Overall, it seems as though the state is slowly picking up the pieces and is improving its workforce slowly but steadily.
