If I said the name The Bachman Company what would come to mind? Some of you may be drawing a blank, while others among you might associate part of the name with a band. Either way you would be wrong. For those of you who did not come up with snack treats in mind, here is a look at how the company has chosen to describe itself,  “Since 1884, The Bachman Company has represented a long tradition of classic quality and product excellence. It is a family owned and operated company that has been committed to making quality pretzels and snacks for over 125 years — including gluten free and kosher product lines. Other Bachman favorites include Brick-Oven Flame-Baked® Pretzels, Jax Cheese Curls, Stone-Ground Tortilla Chips, Air Popped PopCorn, a variety of potato chips and more. Bachman is headquartered in Reading, Pennsylvania, and has manufacturing facilities in Berks and Lancaster counties. The company is a proud participant in the PA Preferred Program, promoting locally-produced products. Visit www.bachmanfoods.com for more information and to see the video on how the Puzzle Pretzel is made. “

The company is getting ready to sell of some of its assets to its competitors in a move that the company seems to hope will streamline its operations and cut back on the complexity of its business model. This means that there will be some serious transitions ahead for the staff.

The company has not out a hard number on the amount of job cuts that are going to be made when all is said and done, though this many be because the cuts will be in the hands of the buying company. There is a chance that this may result in a mass layoff action. For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the federal government defines the term, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.”

Instead of talking about the latest job cuts the company instead chose to use its most recent press release to tell consumers about how it has altered its line of pretzels to make them more crispy then they were before, “With its new formula, The Bachman Company’s Puzzle Pretzel is crispier and crunchier than ever. The improved Puzzle Pretzel is baked for premium quality, is all natural, and offers a good source of calcium. This crispy snack with a firm snap can be found in grocery stores throughout the northeast and online at www.thepretzelstore.com.”

For the time being it seems all that the effected workers can do it wait and see what happens to their positions.
