Royal Philips Electronics is a name that some of you may be familiar with, while others may not know about them at all. So, for those of you who are not too familiar with the details of the company here is a look at how the company has chosen to describe itself, “ Headquartered in the Netherlands, Philips employs approximately 128,000 employees in more than 60 countries worldwide. With sales of EUR 27 billion in 2007, the company is a market leader in cardiac care, acute care and home healthcare, energy efficient lighting solutions and new lighting applications, as well as lifestyle products for personal well-being and pleasure with strong leadership positions in flat TV, male shaving and grooming, portable entertainment and oral healthcare.”

Now that you are up to speed about the organization lets talk about the job cuts to come. The company is getting ready to cut back on about 218 workers. The job cuts are being made to a lighting plant in Belgium. The company is attributing these manufacturing job cuts to a lack in demand for the LED products that are made by the company in that facility.

Sadly this is not the first time that the company has resorted to layoffs in order to help make ends meet. For those of you who missed out on our coverage of layoffs made by the company is September here is an excerpt that will get you up to speed in no time at all, “The company is getting ready to cut back on more than 2,000 jobs in an effort to cut back on its costs. The job cuts, which are set to impact 2,200 jobs, have not been outlined in much detail. We do know that the workers are set to be cut sometime between now and the end of 2014, but other than that not much is known. We do not know which positions exactly are set to be cut or when exactly they will be taken off of the payroll.”

Interestingly enough the company, in its most recent release, chose to highlight a new product made by the company. Ironically the company was promoting a new LED light setup, known as hue which has made its way to stores at the end of October, “Continuing its tradition of developing innovative lighting products and solutions, Philips today introduced hue, the world’s first Web-enabled LED home lighting system available direct to the consumer.  Offered exclusively through Apple stores beginning on October 30, the hue starter kit includes three LED bulbs that fit into any standard light fixture, a bridge that connects to existing wireless routers. Philips hue sets up in minutes and, with a quick download of the hue application, the system can be controlled from any iOS or Android device.  From the app, consumers can remotely control their home lighting for added security, personalize their lighting experience with custom settings, or program timers to help manage daily schedules, all through the convenience of their smart device.”
