Awrey is a name that most of you will not be very familiar with, unless you happen to be a fan of fine baked goods that is. For those of you who are less excited about pastries lets begin by taking a look at how the company describes itself, then we can look at the job cuts that they are making,”For nearly 100 years, Awrey has successfully blended the handmade quality and personalized service you have come to expect from your neighborhood baker, with the modern convenience and efficiency of a national foodservice bakery. Awrey Bakeries LLC is one of the largest, privately owned baked goods producers in the country, serving a variety of customers ranging from convenience stores to the U.S. Military. From wholesome breakfast treats to delectable snacks and desserts, we produce a wide assortment of product lines to meet the needs of our customers. A true one-stop shop.”

Sadly the company is getting ready to make a mass layoff action happen. For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the company chooses to describe itself, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.” The only good news would be that if the company manages to trigger a mass layoff action the workers would have to be given several weeks of notification before they are put out of a job.

150 workers at the bakery are being give temporary layoff notices in order to help them to cut back on their costs. The layoffs, which will go into effect for a sixty-day span, will happen at an as yet unannounced time in the future. For the time being the company has not outlined any information about the specific positions to be cut under this plan.

This move is a fairly radical shift from the company’s plan only a few short years ago. Back as early as 2009 the company was busy making acquisitions, ” ABI Holdings, LLC, the parent company of Awrey Bakeries, LLC is pleased to announce the acquisition of Atkins Elegant Desserts based in Noblesville, Indiana. From its modern 58,000 sq.ft. baking facility, Atkins is a recognized leader in the production and marketing of premium fully-baked frozen cheesecakes and decorated layer cakes for the foodservice and retail bakery industries. ‘We are pleased with this strategic acquisition that expands Awrey’s product line and customer base,” said Bob Wallace, President & CEO of Awrey Bakeries. “Atkins produces an excellent cheesecake solution for the foodservice and bakery markets and provides an ideal extension to Awrey’s broad portfolio of fully-baked frozen bakery products.”
