Oakland Out of Time on Police Layoffs
Post Views 0The deadline has arrived and still there are no answers in Oakland. Barring a last-minute breakthrough, 80 police officers will be laid off at midnight. Police officers have agreed to concessions which would require them to pay 9% of their salaries into the Oakland PD pension fund. In return, however, police have demanded a three-year moratorium on layoffs. City Council President Jane Brunner says that’s simply unworkable.
“We wish we could offer them a three-year no layoff protection we just can’t financially. It would be irresponsible of us,” said Brunner. If a deal can’t be reached by midnight, 10% of Oakland’s police force will be out of job.
