According to its website, the Baltimore Opera Company has filed a petition under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. The company claims “harsh economic conditions placed ongoing operations in jeopardy.”

The company spent the past few months exploring options to expand the financial base of the Baltimore institution. According to Mac Calvaresi of the Balimore Musical Theatre Examiner “there was plenty of advertising about this year’s selection of performances. Previous ticket buyers received multiple pamphlets in the mail, offering season tickets and passes to special events for the new season. Having seen some of these myself, it was quite clear that there was a new effort to increase overall ticket sales by “sprucing up” the opera company itself.” But Calvaresi called the efforts “too little, too late.”

The company will undergo an administrative re-organization, as well as cancel its upcoming shows The Barber of Seville and Porgy and Bess.
