charlotte_12The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District in North Carolina has held an annual job fair for years now at the Charlotte Convention Center.  However, with Friday’s news that CMS may have to cut 1,200 jobs, 1,000 of which could be teachers, the district has announced that it will not hold the job fair this year.

Last week, Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones sent a letter to CMS telling the district to expect a 10% cut in funding for its budget.  Two weeks ago, that figure was just at 5%.  At the time, it looked as though CMS was looking at a shortfall of $50 million.  That number now appears to be more like $80 million.

At a CMS retreat on February 13, board members acknowledged that these layoffs alone may not be enough to meet the new budgetary demands.  Salary cuts and mandatory furloughs are possibilities for every CMS employee.  Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Peter Gorman will present his budget recommendations to the board on March 10.
