haverhillHaverhill, Massachusetts Mayor James Fiorentini announced at a City Hall meeting on Monday night that he plans to eliminate several jobs in city government.  The mayor is looking to cut eight to ten jobs at City Hall, one or two firefighters, and a mechanic and domestic violence officer from the Police Department.  Many residents, including members of the Fire and Police Departments, have strongly urged Fiorentini not to cut jobs in these sectors.

“If we don’t cut public safety, that means we have to close the library or devastate our schools,” he told the City Council last week. “The cuts have to be balanced among all departments, including the schools, to be fair and to be perceived as fair. The sacrifice has to be shared.”  Fiorentini also said he has no plans to take any police officers off of the street.

The mayor also said that cutbacks in Haverhill are “nowhere near as severe” as in other cities across Massachusetts.
