duken2Plattsburgh City, N.Y. is considering the layoffs of up to 15 employees in addition to a reduction in school programs and curriculum according to Superintendent James Short.

“With a reduction of state aid flowing, logically, it puts us into a financial crunch,” said the superintendent. “We’ve got to go with our worst-case scenario and our most conservative estimates.”

Short also said that the district will be planning for a $1.6 million budget gap as a result of reduced federal and state funding. He claimed that the district would do everything possible to avoid increasing taxes.

“We’re quite aware that raising taxes to solve the problem is not the answer, it just cannot be the answer,” he said. “So reductions will have to be part of the answer.”

There was no specification as to which jobs would be cut in the event of layoffs, but Short did say that some school programs would likely face cuts.
