New York City’s Avon Products said today that it plans to cut 2,500 to 3,000 jobs, some vacant positions among them, over four years.

The world’s largest direct seller of cosmetics expects annual savings of about $200 million when the plan is in full effect by 2012 or 2013.

Avon had said that it expected 2009 to be a rough year, as consumers cut spending and sought deals when they did decide to buy. To cater to that demand, Avon is introducing more products under $5 this year.

Avon Products is a US cosmetics, perfume and toy seller with markets in over 140 countries across the world and sales of $9.9 billion worldwide as of 2007.
