The Buffalo News has extended a buyout offer to its largest union, the Buffalo Newspaper Guild CWA-Local 31026, by one week.  It has warned that, if more employees to not accept the package, layoffs may be in the very near future.

“We have a mandate that we have to be a smaller company,” said Dottie Gallagher-Cohen, News senior vice president of marketing. “Layoffs are one of the options we may have to consider.”

The Buffalo News has 897 employees. The Guild is the largest of 11 unions at the News.

Those who accept the buyout offer will receive a minimum $60,000, one-time payment — before taxes.

The News has instituted other initiatives to help beef up its annual revenues. Earlier this month, it raised the newsstand price of the paper by 25 cents. The price had been 50 cents for the past several years.
