With two major employers in the Charleston, West Virginia area laying off workers, the city is feeling the pinch to the tune of thousands of dollars.
Chesapeake Energy announced Thursday it is cutting 215 jobs from its Charleston location. Then, NiSource announced Friday it will cut another 95 positions at its Columbia Gas Location along MacCorkle Avenue.
According to Charleston City Collector Charlie Thompson, the city will lose nearly $24,000 a year from Chesapeake Energy employees who paid the city’s user fee. The city will lose another $9,500 a year with the layoffs at Columbia Gas.
Thompson expects that, in addition to lost revenue for the city, local business and hotels that cater to the two employers will also hurt as a result of the layoffs.
