Boston Mayor Tom Menino told WBZ  radio that, as a result of most city unions ignoring his request for a wage freeze, layoffs will come for city employees.  Most likey, the layoffs will begin soon with probable furloughs next week.
“We will very shortly will be announcing several layoffs in the city of Boston and we’ll have to do that because we’re not getting the cooperation we thought we’d get from the different unions in our city,” said Menino.
Menino says Boston is facing the same economic pressures as other cities and towns in Massachusetts, many of which have already announced significant layoffs.

A report from the Boston Finance Commission last week claimed that the city was losing millions of dollars in unnecessary overtime, building maintenance, and out of state consultants.
The commission was critical of public safety officials for failing to keep overtime costs under control. They found overtime costs exceeding the budget of $17 million in the Police Department and of $5.3 million in the Fire Department.
