GM logoTwenty of the remaining 37 employees at the General Motors Powertrain plant in Massena, New York have signed up for the corporation’s special attrition program.

Rather than continue to wait for transfers to other GM plants, the 20 decided to leave voluntarily under the program.

The deadline for acceptance was Tuesday. About 7,500 GM employees have accepted the program.

GM offered normal or voluntary retirement to hourly employees eligible to retire by the end of this year. Those employees were offered a $25,000 vehicle voucher and a $20,000 cash payment.

A second retirement option was offered to people who have worked for GM for at least 10 years and who are over 50 years old, or over 55 with 10 years and on permanent layoff. Employees also were offered both vouchers and cash to quit voluntarily.
