VDOT Gives Out Bonuses Despite Job Cuts

VDOTOver 400 Virginia Department of Transportation employees received one-time bonuses and pay raises last year, even as the agency announced widespread layoffs.

The VDOT paid out $510,000 in one-time bonuses and salary increases in 2008 to some of its top employees.

The agency announced in February it would lay off 450 hourly and temporary workers, and cut an additional 1,000 full-time jobs over the next 18 months.

Last year, 7,458 state employees received $3.65 million in bonuses, according to Governor Timothy M. Kaine’s office.
