LAUSDThe disastrously underfunded and poorly managed Los Angeles Unified School District has pounded another nail into its own coffin, announcing layoffs for over 5,000 teachers, counselors, custodians, clerks and others.

The Board of Education’s 4-3 vote to approve the layoffs does close most of the district’s $596 million deficit for next year.

Layoffs will target 3,500 non-tenured teachers, plus administrators, nursing staff, library aides, computer programmers and others. The budget also calls for increases in class sizes, and some schools will not have principals.
