The unit supplies advanced systems for national security and military, civil government and commercial customers. Its products include space flight systems, navigation, meteorological & communications satellites, and ballistic missiles.

The layoffs target technical, managerial and administrative jobs at plants in Denver, Colorado and Sunnyvale, California.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems is one of the four major business divisions of Lockheed Martin. It is headquartered in Denver. The unit designed Orion, the crew module for the NASA Constellation Program, which will replace the Space Shuttle program.
