USEClogoUSEC Inc, the only company supplying enriched uranium for domestic nuclear power plants, has demobilized operations on its plant in Ohio after the Department of Energy withheld $2 billion in loan guarantees due to concerns about the facilities technical and commercial viability. The plant, which is 80% complete, will be remobilized if the DoE’s concerns are addressed and the loan process is resumed. For now, 120 people employed by USEC and another 850 employed by its suppliers have been laid off, and the company claims several thousand other jobs have been indirectly affected.
