portland_flag (1)Portland steel manufacturer Canron Western Constructors Inc. announced that it will “significantly curtail operations and lay off” employees at its Northeast Portland plant. It was revealed that the company had filed a Work Adjustment and Retraining Notification with Oregon state as well as Portland Mayor Sam Adam’s office.

The general manager at Canron Western, Michael Eckstein, refused to comment until he could reach employees directly about the moves.

The majority of the layoffs will occur at the company’s plant. 35 mechanics lost their jobs, as well as 15 welders and 4 foremen. According to Eckstein, 16 layoffs occurred at the company’s front office.

In its letter to the city and state, the company has said that it has several projects in Canada that will provide work for Portland employees in 2010.

The layoffs will take place by Dec. 7.
