Jersey City Cuts 278 Jobs
Post Views 2Jersey City, New Jersey will lay off 278 employees on February 26th to combat a budget deficit in the millions. 240 season workers, 36 provisional employees and 2 unclassified employees will lose positions. None of the job losses are civil service positions. These lay offs will save Jersey City $1.3 million in 2010 and $4.3 million in 2011. Without these cuts the city budget would raise taxes by $800 for the owner of a home assessed at $100,000 according to officials.
Last month the city also closed four fire companies and scaled back the arson unit. The City Council will hold a public hearing on the budget February 24.
