new york subwayNew York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority is on the verge of laying off about 1,000 workers, according to multiple published reports out Tuesday.

The MTA cites decreased revenues and a growing deficit as reasons for the cuts, which could save the agency around $50 million. The New York Daily News reports the layoffs will include 600 employees in the administrative department and 450 subway station agents.

In December, the MTA board approved several cost-saving measures, including trimming bus and train service. There will be public hearings on the proposal in March.
