northropgrumman_160x120Layoff notices have been sent by Northrop Grumman to 180 employees at its maintenance and modification center in Hagerstown, Md.

The employees are expected to stay on until projects with the Navy and U.S. Customs and Border Protection is completed in mid-June. If work does not pick up at the Hagerstown facility, the company hopes to find employment for the affected workers at its other sites.

“This was not an easy decision,” David Tracy, Northrop Grumman Technical Services Hagerstown site director told Business Journal. “However, we find ourselves closing out existing task orders while waiting on new business opportunities.”

Additional work at Hagerstown could come in early fall, according the report. Northrop Grumman is based in Los Angeles and is one of the Washington area’s largest employers with 21,000 employees in the metro area.
