More than 1,000 positions, 732 of which are full-time teaching jobs, are being cut from the Elgin School District U-46. As is typical, band, orchestra, and sports have made it to the top of the list of areas to be pruned from the cuts.

Lying 40 miles north-west of Chicago, the district services over 40,000 students and has just over 2,000 teachers according to Local School Directory.com. The change will bring the current student to teacher ratio of 20 students for 1 teacher up to 31 students for 1 teacher.

Sentiments in the local Daily Herald paper varied, some feeling the teachers are being “underpaid and overworked,” while others simply felt the system is currently too bloated.
