Los Angeles, faced with a $485 million budget shortfall, is considering laying of some 750 city employees.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa put forth the proposal in his budget, which is to be revealed Tuesday.

These layoffs come in addition to the 105 pink slips already issued for this fiscal year. July 1 would be the initial date the layoffs take effect.

Also included in Villaraigosa’s budget is a proposal to have 2,400 employees retire early, and 400 to be transferred to semi-autonomous city agencies, such as the airport and port of L.A.

The Los Angeles City Council must first approve the budget before any action is taken.
