In an attempt to close the $18.8 million budget gap for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker proposed a list of fee hikes and service cuts on Tuesday.

The cuts include pruning 67 of the city’s roughly 3,000 full-time positions, although 42 of those positions are currently vacant.

“We need to accept this is our new reality; this is the new normal,” said Becker as he revealed his proposal. “We cannot simply look at these lean years as an aberration while we wait for the flush years to return.”
