According to the Sacramento Business Journal, telecommunications company SureWest has plans to let go of 60 of its employees, a 7 percent staff cut that will save it $5 million in 2011.  The bulk of the layoffs, 45 of its personnel, will take place at its Sacramento office.  Eight will occur at its Kansas City operation.  All are effective June 30.  The remainder represents vacant positions that the company has chosen not to fill.

The cuts come at a time when the company is focusing on its broad band business, which has seen significant growth in recent times.  The Business Journal reports that the company’s landline phone service, like other telecoms, has been declining and generating less revenue and cites it as a potential reason for the layoffs.
