The Detroit City Council voted late last week to override Mayor David Bing’s veto of its proposed 2010-2011 budget. Bing said in a letter to council members that he would begin implementing the new budget under protest.

The council’s budget, which includes $30 million in cuts in addition to the $100 million outlined in Bing’s original budget, likely means layoffs for about 100 additional police officers and an unknown number of firefighters and emergency medical personnel.

Bing criticized the new budget today, saying “I trust Council is prepared to explain and justify its budget and all the negative impact that it will inevitably have on service delivery to the citizens of Detroit.”
