The State

Encompassed by the Southern Rocky Mountains, stretched over by the North Eastern Colorado Plateau and covered with the western part of the Great Plains, this state is not only varied in its natural resources but also in population.

This state is known as the Centennial State. This is because it joined the Union in 1876 as the 38th state. 1876 was the centennial year of Declaration of Independence of the United States, hence the name for the state.

The gross state product of Colorado was $248.6 billion in 2008. Mining, agriculture and livestock are the chief activities of the state. In fact, the federal government has also an extremely important role to play in the state.

Important federal facilities include the United States Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base and NORAD in Colorado Springs and National Institute of Standards and Technology and NOAA in Boulder.
