michiganflag_160x120Last month, Michigan governor, Jennifer Granholm, blocked the issuance of a permit for a new power plant in Rogers City, which rests on the upper Michigan peninsula on the shores of Lake Huron.  According to a piece in the Detroit Free Press, her decision will have disastrous repercussions both for the state’s economy and the governor’s political legacy.
Union officials say that the plant would have alone created over 2,500 good paying construction jobs for the region, not to mention new jobs at the plant itself and in industry revolving around the plant.

Despite backing and financial support from the Obama administration, the Wolverine Power Co. project to create a state of the art clean coal facility has been stymied by the Michigan governor and will only cause further economic decline in a region of the country already hardest hit by the recession.
