texasflag_160x120Around 500 city workers in Dallas are scheduled to receive layoff notices this fall in an effort to help close the city’s major budget deficit.

When announcing the layoffs Thursday morning, Dallas City Manager Mary Suhm said the job cuts will help reduce the city’s budget shortfall from a high of $130 million to just under $19 million. She is expected to propose a $2 billion operating budget to the city council next month, which if approved, would result in the large number of layoffs in October.

Suhm would not say which Dallas city workers would be losing their jobs. The city of Dallas currently has 12,875 employees, according to the Associated Press.
