The union represents hourly workers at Thomas Built. They say the layoffs will mainly affect employees with a seniority date after January 1, 2002.

“Layoff procedures will be done in accordance with the current contract language,” says the union. The union also says that Thomas Built Buses is considering requests for voluntary layoffs from employees not affected by the downsizing.

The High Point Enterprise is claiming that the layoffs are due to a downturn in orders, some seasonal and some arising from lagging tax revenues for states.

Earlier in 2010, Thomas recalled around 100 employees who had been laid off in 2009.
